Movie Review: The Beekeeper

Prepare for an adrenaline-fueled joyride with Jason Statham’s latest film, The Beekeeper.

One man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after it’s revealed he’s a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as Beekeepers.

The Beekeeper is much like most of Statham’s movies, very loud and very fast. This film does not hold back, and those who love that adrenaline rush are in for a treat. It pretty much remains that way, but also takes its time to reset for some faster-paced setups to prepare you for the next bit of mayhem that unfolds on screen.

The humor, whether it’s direct or indirect, had me laughing quite a bit which made the movie even more fun and engaging. It has plenty of zingers to please that funny bone, making you crack up at the way Statham dryly delivers a message, or Jeremy Irons’ sarcasm and logic comes out like Scar. The movie also pokes fun at the government system and the political jokes were toned back, purposefully and nicely, to be very, very fun without being too much.

It has a better story than I was expecting, one that is simple and easy to follow. The story surprisingly has some decent character developments to mix in, which helps give some clarity to a few of the characters. There is a nice little “twist” that should add a little more to the plot, but not enough that it offsets the main focus.

The action is pretty much the meat of this movie and what most viewers will be coming to see, it does not disappoint. Statham and his team get creative in just how much fun a special agent can have, providing lots of playgrounds for these sequences to take place. This is where sound and cinema work the most by pulling together and bringing the pure spectacle of elite ops vs the world, and it accomplishes that in pure Statham glory.

There are those movies that know how to deliver that shot and moment that just oozes satisfaction. The Beekeeper surprisingly accomplishes this with several of those moments captured in the perfect shot as Statham gets the hit or kill that just makes you nod. It adds a little bit more to the violence, gives some depth to his character without words, and helps them provide the movie with just that bit of depth that most films like these lose.

Overall, The Beekeeper is a smash hit when it comes to the action and the fun of watching a one-man army take out the bad guys. It’s very fast, exciting, and holds enough merit to build a foundation that gives meaning to the chaos and violence. The comedy helps add that relief to the darker undertones that go well with the action. Add in the sense of justice and some engaging action helps this movie thrive and excel in the promised entertainment the trailers provided. However, there are some limitations to the story, the stupid antics that are hyperbolic feats of superhuman levels, and some one-sided antics that can be a bit stale. Still, this one is worth a trip to the theaters, and one I’ll be watching again.

The Beekeeper is now playing in theaters.
