Black Widow Review: Johansson Brings Back Natasha One Last Time

Marvel Studios is finally back on the big screen. While it took far too long for Black Widow to get her own solo film, she puts her moment to good use in epic style.

Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy, and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is finally here and it did not disappoint. After her introduction in Iron Man 2, fans have been itching for a solo film, and when it was finally announced there was lots of excitement and doubt that it wouldn’t live up to high expectations especially considering her fate in Avengers: Endgame. The film not only lived up to expectations but absolutely exceeded them.

Director Cate Shortland delivers an amusing, intense, and entertaining story worthy of the fan-favorite character. The film has its own gritty distinctiveness that also blends in perfectly with the rest of the MCU. Scarlett Johansson delivered an outstanding performance and you can’t help but get teary-eyed knowing this is the last time we will get to see her in the MCU. Florence Pugh gives us all her charm in Yelena, making you instantly fall in love with her and excited to see what her future holds. Black Widow also does a stellar job at delivering insane action sequences that only the MCU can properly deliver.

Black Widow is a welcomed showcase for Johansson, and both she and Marvel have come a long since her debut in Iron Man 2, adding more emotional weight to the character, who expresses her desire to prove that she isn’t just a trained killer.

Overall, Black Widow is the perfect movie to get Marvel fans back to the theaters, while playing like a sentimental closing of one door as the company moves on to its next phase, and gives fans a chance to say goodbye to an old friend.

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow is now playing in theaters and also streaming on Disney+ with Premier Access (additional fee required)

What did you think of the film? Sound off in the comments.
