Free Guy Review: A Fun and Entertaining Trip To The Movies

Ryan Reynolds new film, Free Guy is a funny, fun, and entertaining trip back to the movies

When a bank teller discovers he’s a background player in an open-world video game, he decides to become the hero of his own story — one that he can rewrite himself. In a world where there are no limits, he’s determined to save the day his way before it’s too late, and maybe find a little romance with the coder who conceived him.

Even though it feels like I’ve seen many movies this year, it still feels like there haven’t been that many due to Covid-19 pushing many films to later dates, or studios are releasing their films simultaneously in theaters and on their streaming service on the same day. However, 20th Century Studios decided to release their big-budget action-comedy Free Guy exclusively in theaters.

There are many reasons to watch this film, but the main reason is Ryan Reynolds, who is as charming and funny as ever. Even if you aren’t a fan of Reynolds, it’s very hard to deny his charisma. His character’s innocence and constant optimism are infectious and hilarious enough to make some great jokes. It’s very hard to picture anyone by him playing the role of Guy. While Reynolds is fun to watch, he isn’t the only reason to watch this film. Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer kills it in her role as the hard-nosed video game version of her character and the nerdy and vulnerable real-world version. But, one of my favorite performances comes from Stranger Things Joey Keery who puts in a great performance that is both funny and endearing.

Free Guy is so full of cameos it’s almost like watching a Muppets movie. I’m not gonna say who makes cameos because they are surprising and hilarious, so if you want to keep the surprise I suggest staying away from spoilers.

Most movies today seem to give up on the story to show off more of a spectacle, but with Free Guy, you actually get a pretty good story that keeps you invested. I’m not gonna say much about the story to avoid spoilers, but I will say that it’s more throughout and put together than most big-budget movies nowadays.

Overall, Free Guy is a must-see film this year, and the design of the video game world is visually stunning and deserves to be seen on the biggest IMAX screen available. Free Guy is great for a night out to movies and has something for everyone.

Free Guy is now playing exclusively in theaters.

What did you think of the film? Sound off in the comments.
