Last Night in Soho Review: Anya Taylor-Joy Mesmerizes In This Twisted Tale

The 1960s come alive in the deliciously twisted Last Night in Soho, taking you back to London’s past.

An aspiring fashion designer (Thomasin McKenzie) is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s, where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer (Anya Taylor-Joy). However, glamour is not all it appears to be, and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far darker.

The best way that I can begin to describe this movie is that it can be classified as a modern-day Hitchcock thriller. Last Night in Soho starts off a kind of a slow burn, intimate story but then quickly descends into madness with its mind games and terror.

From the amazing costume designs to the crazy choreography, combined with a killer 60’s soundtrack will make you want to get up and dance. One of the best aspects of this film is hands down the camera work, especially when you add in all the visual effects and editing. The story itself has you simultaneously going from the 60s and present-day London, which is executed with very energetic and stylish fashion. You get sucked into this world instantly with some scenes so jaw-dropping, it will leave you wondering how they created it.

Director Edgar Wright has once again found a way to make a film that isn’t all that original and yet manages to still feel fresh and unexpectedly relevant. Anya Taylor-Joy is just as mesmerizing as always, I mean you really can’t take your eyes off her in this film. Thomasin McKenzie is brilliant as her character goes through a wide range of emotions throughout the film.

There isn’t much more that I can say without getting into spoiler territory but, overall, Last Night in Soho is a marvelous, mind-melting cocktail of 60s nostalgia, iconic fashion and haunting emotions all whisked together into a supernatural adventure. It may take a little bit of patience at first but hang in there because this wild ride is absolutely worth it.

Last Night in Soho is now playing only in theaters.
