Movie Review: Civil War

Alex Garland’s Civil War is a gripping film that challenges viewers to question their allegiance.

In a dystopian future America, a team of military-embedded journalists races against time to reach Washington, D.C., before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

A24 has assembled a team of highly skilled individuals to bring this intense movie to life. The acting is exceptional, with performances that are true to life and depict the struggles of individuals caught in a chaotic and harsh environment. Kirsten Dunst delivers an outstanding performance, with a balanced and poised portrayal that evolves as the characters journey towards Washington D.C. Wagner Moura is an excellent co-star, bringing a raw and bold element to his role that complements Dunst’s hard neutrality.

Together, they deliver authentic and engaging character profiles that viewers can relate to and explore the war through. The chemistry between the leads is fantastic, and the performances by Cailee Spaeny and Stephen McKinley Henderson also add depth to the movie.

The movie is not just about the characters but also delves into a charged subject matter in a detailed and artistic way. Civil War provides political commentary and explores the troubled nature of the world from a unique perspective of journalism. Garland’s writing and direction effectively weave together many stories, all connected to the primary group of journalists. The material is tough and realistic, but still tasteful and respectful, avoiding the over-the-top theatricality that plagues many movies dealing with similar topics. The realism is powerful, evoking strong emotions and keeping the audience on edge, especially when combined with the intriguing characters.

Garland’s team uses various techniques to enhance the writing and performances, including well-paced editing, music that enhances the mood of the scenes, and cinematography that captures it all in captivating moments. Some scenes may be hard to watch, but those who can tolerate it will be rewarded with footage that is gripping and intense. All these elements come together to form a great movie produced by A24 that I found hard to look away from.

Overall, Civil War is a difficult movie to watch because of its close resemblance to the real world and the brutal nature of war. However, if you can handle it, you’ll be rewarded with a powerful and impactful film that boasts incredible artistic flair. The performances of the cast, particularly Dunst and her co-stars, bring the story to life and make them intriguing players in the theater of war. The writing and planning integrated into the story are fantastic, which further amplifies the suspense and stakes that make the movie thrilling. The cinematography is the magical key that brings the edge and suspense, making the film even more exciting to watch. However, some of the artistic choices that the filmmakers made bloat the movie, and some character misuses might irritate fans. Despite these flaws, Civil War has become one of my favorite A24 films in a while due to its focus on the story over the odder content they choose. If you can handle the raw material, this movie is worth watching in the theater.
