Harold and the Purple Crayon is brimming with imagination and is perfect for a family movie night.
Inside his book, adventurous Harold (Zachary Levi) can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, he soon learns his trusty crayon can set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. However, when the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of his creativity to save both the real world and his own.
Harold and the Purple Crayon is a charming sequel to the beloved book. The movie is fantastic for families, featuring charming comedy, innocent jokes, and a few adult jokes that are all G-rated, making it enjoyable for all ages. The movie takes the innocence of the book and presents it in the real world, providing valuable lessons for all viewers. The heartfelt presentation adds a quaint and enjoyable tone, further amplified by the feel-good music that accompanies many of the “epic” crayon catastrophes.
Overall, I was impressed by the creativity of the film, especially how it captured the wild imagination of youth. I enjoyed the way the drawings transformed into real items, reflecting the inner spirit of a child. Zachary Levi’s performance stood out to me. Like in his other roles, he portrayed his character with a unique blend of man-child quirkiness that was endearing rather than pitiful or annoying. When interacting with the other characters, he brought a dynamic portrayal to the screen without seeming to overdo it.
