Movie Review: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a fun movie that serves as a love letter to fans of the franchise, although it can be a bit unbalanced at times.

The Spengler family returns to the iconic New York City firehouse where the original Ghostbusters have taken ghost-busting to the next level. When discovering an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, new and old Ghostbusters must unite to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire succeeds in being a fun movie to watch mainly due to its presentation style. The movie moves at a great pace, which keeps things interesting while also giving us enough time to get caught up with the lives of the characters. Comedy is a constant presence throughout the movie, with different styles of humor blending to create witty quirks, sarcastic jabs, and some situational sliming that is always a running gag in this series.

The movie features familiar styles and great references to the series, which includes an element of egg hunting and inside information that adds to the enjoyment for avid fans. The world-building and design of ghosts are impressive, with stylized creatures that linger in New York, adding a theatrical element to the movie. The main villain, in particular, is well-built, with impressive movements, voice, and elongated features that never go overboard, but still feel like the villain from the cartoons. The other ghosts also have their unique flair that captures the essence of the series.

When the origin story is added, the opening acts enhance the designs and give more “life” to the ghosts. All of this is accompanied by fluid animations and movements that can only be achieved when Hollywood commits its resources and time.

The character development of some of the characters is good, and several stories have a relevant bite to them. The performances are also noteworthy as they help bring out the characters’ full force and convey the perfect emotions, which sell those heartfelt moments to the perfect degree.

Overall, I enjoyed much of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. It’s an enjoyable film with entertaining antics, a good pace, and plenty of humor to keep things entertaining. The actors were great and the world-building/design is stunning, making the busting adventure as life-like as possible while keeping up with modern-day graphics without sacrificing quality. The movie was an awesome spectacle, with a touching finish and that same heartwarming ambiance that Afterlife brought. However, the final act seemed rushed and weakened, which felt off compared to the rest of the movie. The characters were imbalanced, the villain was misused, and silly elements got in the way of the spooky story, which was a step back from the promise of the trailers. Nonetheless, the fun elements of the movie were still enough to encourage seeing the film, hopefully at the theater as well.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is now playing in theaters.
