The Scream franchise is still going strong with Scream 6, the bloodiest and scariest installment yet.
Four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. However, they soon find themselves fighting for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage.
First off, I just want to start by stating how lucky are we to still be getting Scream movies that still manage to keep the quality we love in these films. Scream 6 is everything we wanted and more in a Scream movie. From the opening scene to the big reveal was nothing sort of incredible. The film plays out mostly what we would expect structurally. A bit of a build-up, then more kills, and moments with some extra character developments that make everyone look suspicious, which all leads up to the grand finale and the big reveal.
The change from Woodsboro to New York was a cool and interesting change that definitely gave the film and different vibe compared to previous entries. The kill scenes are set in places like the convenience store and on subway trains and were handled very well. There was real potential for this film to feel like it was going too hard to be unique, but that is not how these scenes came across.
I will say, it was weird not seeing our final girl Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in this film, but there is so much that is going on you don’t even really notice her absence. I also what to say that I am loving what they are doing with Sam Carpenter, Melissa Barrera’s character and her performance is a standout in this film. Barrera basically takes what they tee up in Scream 5 and just takes off with it and that balance of sensitivity, heart, and ferocity is not an easy thing to manage and she does it.
The killings in Scream 6 are perhaps the most violent in the series by far. They were not kidding when they said there hasn’t been a Ghostface like this before and they are not here to play games. There is a definite respect and love for the movies that have come before while also creating something new and also embracing the idea that the rules need to change and evolve, which they do to great effect.
Overall, Scream 6 is a freaking good time. In true sequel fashion, it’s bigger, bloodier, and scarier. There are some things that if wanted to nitpick at you certainly could and some of the character decisions and logic used are just as forced as they’ve ever been in this series It’s also important to see Scream 5 before this one as it almost acts like a Part 2, and also the previous Scream films with a special mention to Scream 4 as it was great to have Hayden Panettiere’s film geek character Kirby Reed back.
