Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Review: The Sequel Ups the Stakes and Improves Upon It’s Predecessor

Now, this is how to adapt a video game to the big screen! Sonic and the gang are back in action and the stakes are higher than ever in the sequel to the hit 2020 film based on the popular video game.

After settling in Green Hills, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns with a new partner, Knuckles( voiced by Idris Elba), in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessy), and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 feels bigger in every way possible. At times it feels like it bites off more than it can chew, but overall, it’s just funny, charming, and heartfelt as its predecessor. As a matter of fact, there are many ways this sequel is a step up from the first film, particularly, how much more of the video game universe feels plugged into it. There were plenty of Easter Eggs in the first one but with the job of laying out the blueprints for the series and how Sonic fits into this world now playing out, director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington are allowed to really go nuts with working aspects from the games, and they do a great job at this. This shows in the addition of famous characters Tails and Knuckles as they join the Blue Speedster in the sequel, and the movie captures their spirits beautifully.

Whenever these three are on screen, it’s so much fun to watch which bodes well for the future of the film franchise. Longtime Tails voice actor Colleen O’Shaughnessy reprises her role for the big screen, which was a smart choice. O’Shaughnessy brings all the sweetness and innocence that the adorable fox needs. Tail’s relationship with Sonic (Ben Schwartz still remains a great casting choice)  is one of the emotional highlights of the film and gives Sonic more character development. The film leans heavily on the fact that Sonic is still just a kid, which really makes the story better and adds some satisfying growth for the character.

As for Knuckles, Idris Elba steps into his shoes, and it’s awesome. Elba brings a certain seriousness to the role but also ends up getting some of the funniest lines and moments in the movie. He and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik are perfect together as entertainingly mismatched allies. Speaking of Carrey, this feels the most Jim Carrey of all Jim Carrey performances. Carrey goes bigger as Robotnik gets crazier and crazier, and manages to be equally menacing at times too. It’s Carrey at his over-the-top best.

Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the most fun you will have at the movies right now. This franchise is still finding its footing, buts it’s heading in the right direction. The sequel improves upon its predecessor in many ways, while still having some flaws. It feels more in tune with the Sonic lore than ever before, and fans will have a great time seeing their favorite characters brought to life on the big screen. At times, it doesn’t quite know what to do with its other human characters, however, and some might disagree with its two-hour runtime. Still, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a sweet, funny, and action-packed ride that fully embraces its video game roots.
