The Suicide Squad Review: The Best of the DC Films

From the terribly, brilliant mind of James Gunn comes The Suicide Squad an epically hilarious action film worthy of the big screen.

The government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world — Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and others — to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave.

You might be asking yourself if this is a remake or a sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. And that’s a fair question given that it’s the same concept ( a bunch of criminals takes on a highly dangerous black-ops mission). The film even has some returning actors, including Margot Robbie’s charmingly sociopathic Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as team leader Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as the woman-in-charge Amanda Waller.

Director James Gunn sure had a lot of fun making this film with some extreme violence that bloodily massacres many of the film’s ensemble ( I mean, the clue is in the title guys), while keeping the gags coming hot and fast. Gunn excellently shines in the inherent silliness of his story. The film expertly switches between various tones that help create a cohesive and compelling story that juggles heartfelt characters moments and thrilling action, graphic violence, and intelligent humor, overall creating a special experience that all DC fans can truly enjoy watching.

The cast of the film is vast in number with every actor as talented and fun to watch as the last. Peter Capaldi was outstanding as the joyously evil mastermind, The Thinker and it was just hilarious hearing Sylvester Stallone voice the simple, loveable, yet feral beast that is King Shark. As for those returning from the2016 film, felt invigorated and new with Gunn’s writing style while also retaining some connective tissue from the last film and allows Margot Robbie to truly shine as Harley Quinn, giving us one of her best outings as the loveable clown princess. This also lets the film build upon pre-existing lore, enriching the wider DCEU as a whole, while simultaneously providing a completely unique and self-contained story for the audience to get immersed in.

Overall, The Suicide Squad is by far the best of the DC films and needs to be experienced on the biggest screen possible and rewards audiences with unhinged carnage, big laughs, emotional depth, and allows Gunn to do things that he hasn’t been able to due with his Guardians of the Galaxy

The Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters and streaming exclusively on HBO Max (no additional fee required)
