Jennifer Lopez goes back to her rom-com roots in Marry Me, a charming and musically filled good-time and perfect for date night.
Pop superstar Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) is about to get married before an audience of her loyal fans. However, seconds before the ceremony, she learns about her fiance’s cheating ways and has a meltdown on stage. In a moment of inspired insanity, Kat locks eyes with a total stranger (Owen Wilson) in the crowd and marries him on the spot. As forces conspire to separate the unlikely newlyweds, they must soon decide if two people from such different worlds can find true love together.
Marry Me is one of those movies that wastes no time in getting right to the drama and adventure in just the first 20 minutes. The big moment happens early on in the film and sets the stage for the rest of the movie. The movie has a good, fun pace that doesn’t take long to get to the next adventure, and allows enough time for the two characters to band in new ways.
This movie really focuses on the cute factor with this new relationship, which helps brighten up your screens whether you watch it in theaters or from your bedroom. The charm factor does manage to break it out of the typical romance formula. Marry Me brings elements of movies to help with the fun like Kindergarten Cop, Wedding Planner, and a little bit of You’ve Got Mail.
Jennifer Lopes just shines as she returns her roots that we loved with Wedding Planner and Monster In Law. These qualities play rather nicely together to create a more representable and likable character. Owen Wilson’s more toned down and low-key manages to handle the high energy of Lopez, which brings that loveable, goofy relationship that is somewhat inspiring and enjoyable to watch. The chemistry between Wilson and Lopez really drives the movie along, brings other characters into the story, and also elevates their own characters as a result.
Overall, Marry Me is a surprisingly fun movie that will hopefully lift people’s spirits during these hard times. It moves at a pace that is entertaining and breaks out of the typical romantic comedy formula. The acting is great and the pairing between Wilson and Lopez you would think wouldn’t work but it really does.
