Movie Review: Deadpool and Wolverine

The combination of Deadpool and Wolverine teaming up had me in stitches from laughing so hard.

Deadpool’s peaceful existence comes crashing down when the Time Variance Authority recruits him to help safeguard the multiverse. He soon unites with his would-be pal, Wolverine, to complete the mission and save his world from an existential threat.

If you’ve seen the Deadpool movies, you know they’re all about fun, frenzy, and fast-paced antics with the red-clad antihero and his X-men “buddy“. The pace is just as fierce and fun (if not more) as they navigate the MCU/Fox merger and more. The whole thing is loaded with comedy, antics, dialogue, slapstick, and more, showcasing Deadpool’s comedic prowess while being tempered with Wolverine’s rugged bluntness. Ryan Reynolds and his team of writers, alongside Director Shawn Levy’s direction, delved into the internet and movie problems to craft nearly 130 minutes of hilarity that’s been missing in superhero movies. They poke fun at everything, willing to cross the lines in true Deadpool fashion, leaving a love letter to everyone in that charismatic way. It’s filled with references to many aspects of Marvel movies, and for fans/geeks like me, I enjoyed finding everything I could from the comics, movies, and more (alongside the jabs being thrown with it).

However, the movie is not only about the comedy and witty lines that Reynolds has mastered. Deadpool and Wolverine still have surprises and depth to offer, providing fans with more to enjoy in the film. The soundtrack is exceptional, surpassing many other movies not just in variety, but also in the use of songs in ways that most would shy away from, adding a fresh factor that people seem to crave. While the movie is predominantly a buddy-hero comedy, it still carries a touch of Marvel sentimentality that gives our two characters some depth and heart, grounding the adventure without overshadowing the Deadpool essence. Additionally, with the right amount of planning, study, and potentially removing some of the “violence” limits, the action sequences in the movie stand out as some of the best in the Marvel Universe.

The end credits strike a perfect balance, complementing the story and highlighting the strengths of the two main actors. The writing, direction, and design team all contribute to the movie’s success, but credit is also due to the two leads for their outstanding performances. Emma Corrin’s portrayal deserves special recognition, bringing the same depth as a notable Marvel character and adding compelling elements to the complex storyline. Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine is seamless, capturing the rugged antihero’s essence. He pairs perfectly with Ryan Reynolds, who portrays a no-nonsense attitude that complements Jackman’s character. Reynolds brings even more energy to the role, allowing his character to defy traditional studio trends. Their dynamic and entertaining performance made for a captivating movie experience.

Overall, Deadpool and Wolverine had a lot to accomplish, and they certainly achieved a lot. The movie is fun and a solid entry into the Merc With a Mouth series. It excels at so much of what makes Deadpool his signature anti-hero. The comedy alone is enough to praise this movie, but the wit, action, surprising moments of heart, and acting make this movie truly enjoyable. It takes the elements of the MCU that I enjoyed in the past, but puts a modern twist on them, standing out from current trends and internet culture to create a movie that isn’t hindered by the world’s current preferences. It successfully combines action, comedy, and some drama, making it a hit for fans. However, it is still excessive, and Deadpool’s darker plot lines and gimmicks are more NC-17 than R in the ratings. Those not ready for the gore, cursing, crude dialogue, and darker elements will not enjoy a film of this caliber. Also, those looking for the advancement of the MCU and X-Men franchises in 2025 may be disappointed. The movie tries to do so much in a short time and relies heavily on one’s knowledge of a lot of things to fully appreciate this homage to the Marvel empire. While fans like me will delight in it, those without the necessary knowledge may find themselves bored or confused and may not like this movie compared to the other Deadpool entries.
