The third chapter of The Conjuring movie, The Devil Made Me Do It, continues the paranormal investigations of the Warren couple, Ed and Lorraine. The third installment is based on a true event story and the producers decided to go in a different direction this time.
Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) take on one of the most sensational cases of their careers after a cop stumbles upon a dazed and bloodied young man walking down the road. Accused of murder, the suspect claims demonic possession as his defense, forcing the Warrens into a supernatural inquiry, unlike anything they’ve ever seen before.
James Wan has stepped down as director but still serves as a producer, and has passed the torch onto Michael Chaves who directed The Curse of La Llorona back in 2019. It was a decent and enjoyable horror movie. Given that Chaves has experience directing in the horror genre, he proves he is up to the take with this film. And The Devil Made Me Do It definitely surpasses La Llorona.
What makes this film different than the previous two is that they expanded on the setting of the film. While first and second Conjuring movies mostly stayed in one location, with the Warrens battling demons through exorcism, this one ends up being more of a paranormal mystery and investigation story. This changes the game for the franchise where the constant pressures and tensions of the previous films are broken up by long periods of investigations that see the Warrens following clues to piece together the film’s mystery. This take was very interesting, but it did make the film the least scary and tense of the series.
This is by no means saying the film isn’t good. And for those viewers, like me, who have followed this franchise (spin-offs included) since the beginning and are invested in the Warrens and their stories, then this film is worth your time. If this series didn’t have the believable charisma by both Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga who just bring these characters to life, then this franchise would not have lasted this long.
Overall, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It kept me invested and entertained with its characters while providing some killer visuals and a genuinely creepy atmosphere. This film is worth your time, just don’t expect it to be the same as the first two films.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
