From the book of Saw comes Spiral, a thrilling new entry in the popular franchise with an A-list cast that will delight devoted horror fans.
Working in the shadow of his father, Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner take charge of an investigation into grisly murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
I will admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Saw franchise, mainly because I at first I found it too gory and disturbing for my liking, but over the years the franchise has grown on me and now I find the films pretty creative. I still wouldn’t say I’m a massive fan of the franchise, but Spiral kept me entertained and engaged throughout the whole film.
Instead of targeting a whole group of people, Spiral instead targets individuals adding a fresh twist to the franchise. Chris Rock completely nails his role as Detective Zeke with the dark humor he brings in as an actor, but he also serves as one of the main creators of the film. The story is pretty interesting and has more of a point to it than its predecessors and the twists were spot on and kept me guessing till the end. Saw fans have seen a lot of the crazy games in the other films, but these new games were even crazier. The traps in this film are a lot more realistic than the shotgun carousel and the glass box trap from Saw 3D.
Spiral delivers an insane ending that is unexpected and the movie itself is executed in a way that connects all the dots and brings them full circle. If you are a fan of the Saw movies, you will be very pleased with this entry.
