Movie Review: The Creator

Critic Rating:
4/5

The Creator is a realistic Sci-Fi film with beautiful world crafting but gets lost in its convoluted political matter.

As a future war between the human race and artificial intelligence rages on, ex-special forces agent Joshua (John David Washington) is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI. The Creator has developed a mysterious weapon to end the war and all of mankind. As Joshua and his team of elite operatives venture into enemy-occupied territory, they soon discover the world-ending weapon is an AI in the form of a young child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).

Creating an epic Sci-Fi film that feels real takes art, patience, and time which this movie accomplishes. The Creator’s world feels reachable, with cities and towns that offer cultural representation and architecture that feels authentic and the metropolis cities are certainly futuristic, but never look too fake. This world and the story all work and the landscape and world-building really help sell the tale and add elements that help bring audiences into the world. To see the mixing of real-life and CGI work well together and really helps to build the design of this world and mix future and modern together.

The cinematography was spectacular. It is gritty, ugly, and messy but reflects the nature of this movie and the complicated moral web the movie presents. The various angles and shots really maximize the tone of each moment. Desperation in someone pinned down, or the frightening realization that truth is hidden behind angles helps establish the heaviness of the moment.

The Creator’s tale may not be unique, but more in the way it presents itself and handles its subject matter. Adding drama to the movie is a smart one because this film dives into politics, mood, and feelings that are involved with the subject of humanity, good/evil, and rights, The war aspect is very deep into the ethics of it, the emotions trying their best to show how ugly political warfare can be and the lives it ruins. Then adding elements of love, both romantic and familial, further adds contrast to the work to help the audience think how complex it is while trying to lull people into a facet of the movie.

The acting is great on many levels. Gemma Chan was good with a perfect dramatic persona with the potential to do a lot of good. Chan’s quality came more in the nonverbal acting, beautiful, and suave but telling so much in the looks of her eyes with her beauty and charm. John David Washington is still the man on many levels for what he can do to bring his characters to life. The moral retribution, the hurt, the loyalty, and the natural evolution are all there, and always drops his A-game in his line delivery. The standout for me was hands-down, Madeleine Yuna Voyles. Voyles conveys the nature of learning to love and grow was solid and the way he acting evolved with her character was just phenomenal.

Overall, The Creator is a movie that soars beyond what is expected in terms of the artistic presence and the Sci-Fi realism that many viewers enjoy. It’s top-notch in terms of sound and video presentation, world-building/design, and this amazing dramatic landscape to play in. With a sensitive subject matter and great acting to help bring these complicated roles to life, the film achieves some quality acting promised in the film’s trailers. However, the movie gets a little bit lost in the message of the convoluted material and the various takes on political twists cause it to lose the bite it promised. The portrayals are very extreme and the material is so deep and settled into modern times that you might get burnt out when you come for a war thriller. Shuffling all of this around caused many characters to sort of just lack the need for their inclusion when they were sort of flyby characters that held more than we were given. All in all, this movie is absolutely a must-see in theaters so you can really experience the world-building and visuals.
