Movie Review: Tom & Jerry

Everyone’s favorite cat and mouse are back and making the jump from the small screen to the big screen in Tom & Jerry: The Movie, now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.

A legendary rivalry reemerges when Jerry moves into New York City’s finest hotel on the eve of the wedding of the century, forcing the desperate event planner (Chloe Grace Moretz) to hire Tom to get rid of him. As mayhem ensues, the escalating cat-and-mouse battle soon threatens to destroy her career, the wedding, and possibly the hotel itself.

Tom and Jerry’s newest adventure isn’t deep or complicated but still manages to be a fun, nostalgic trip that will bring back those entertaining childhood memories for adults who grew up on the series, while also keeping kids entertained. Director Tim Story does a great job at capturing that classic, nostalgia feels in this live-action animated film, by making the film’s animated characters look more modernized 2D cartoons. This works in the film’s favor because it will immediately take you back to your childhood – way to go animators.

The thing that everyone loved about these cartoons was the creative way these frenemies would go after each other, resulting in some pretty awesome slapstick moments at their best. The film also does its best to flesh out its more human characters. Chloe Grace Moretz helps that quite a bit because she is generally likable and her charm is on full display as her character tries to impress her boss. Michael Pena is always a joy to watch and he brings his personal style to the film. Everyone does their own part to make this film enjoyable, but the real heroes are of course Tom and Jerry. These two never miss an opportunity to get into their classical shinanigans, and yet, still manage to be there for one another.

The film handles the difficult task of switching between human drama and slapstick humor with its animated characters with grace. It’s a difficult juggling act and the film does it in a way that doesn’t take away the pure enjoyment of watching the beloved duo get up to their usual mishaps.

Overall, Tom & Jerry: The Movie will have adults wanting to go back and revisit the classic cartoon and will keep kids entertained and laughing for years to come.
