Movie Review: Imaginary

Imaginary may not be quite what you would imagine, but it still managed to be entertaining at times

When Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter, Alice (Pyper Braun), finds a stuffed bear named Chauncey. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize that Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

Imaginary is a movie that truly impressed me with its consistent pacing and engaging plot. From the very first ten minutes, the movie captured my attention with its intriguing and mischievous storyline, which kept me hooked for the entire two hours. With its faster pacing, the movie felt anything but sluggish, making it a highly enjoyable experience for me.

The movie’s cast was interesting but fell short of the best-acting category. However, Pyper Braun’s performance was outstanding, capturing the raw emotions of her character and delivering a believable portrayal. Taegan Burns showed potential for future roles but had weak transitions. DeWanda Wise was the best actress in the movie, displaying a powerful and balanced performance that brought depth and emotion to her character. Though the writing was sometimes corny, she still managed to deliver an impressive performance that was the highlight of the movie.

The movie had many humorous moments that left you chuckling. Chauncey’s games and taunts were childlike with an adult twist, and the monsters were a laughable parody. The toned-down lines, forced emotion, and overacted character qualities added to the overall humor.

Horror movies use different presentation styles to create lasting terror. Imaginary takes these tricks and puts an original spin on them. Having an imaginary friend as the source of terror creates endless possibilities to put characters in danger. The movie executes these scares creatively, showing the potential for a memorable and frightening experience.

Imaginary features characters dealing with past traumas to move forward. The film authentically presents these struggles, and certain scenes are particularly moving and impactful. One such scene helps answer questions about the characters and strengthens their bond, making for a truly memorable moment. Overall, these character arcs are the best part of the movie as they give purpose to the film and create characters worth investing in.

Overall, Imaginary held a lot of potential but unfortunately, it didn’t deliver on its promises. While the acting was decent and the characters were engaging at times, the movie lacked the punch it needed to stand out. The story had unique elements and creative setups for scares, but it didn’t deliver on them. Additionally, the balance between horror and comedy was off, which made it difficult to fully enjoy the film at times. While some parts did make me chuckle, it felt like it was trying too hard to be funny at times. I would still recommend seeing it in theaters to get the full theater experience.
