Movie Review: Thunder Force

Netflix’s newest movie, Thunder Force, takes two average women with polar opposite personalities and follows them on their journey through friendship and conflict ultimately realizing lifelong goals.

Two childhood best friends reunite as an unlikely crime-fighting superhero duo when one invents a formula that gives ordinary people superpowers.

Thunder Force is a unique take on the superhero genre. It’s a fun and enjoyable film and with a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes, the fast-paced story will make you feel like you didn’t waste your time watching it. The visual effects are pretty decent and neither disappoints or adds any real wow factor to it. The overall plot is very typical for a superhero movie, but the buddy flick comedy of it makes it enjoyable.

The cast is what really makes the movie worth watching. Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy are always a joy to watch, and with the help of their supporting cast especially Jason Bateman are easily the best parts of the movie. However, even with all these amazing performers the characters weren’t as fleshed out as they could have been.

One of the things I did admire about the film is how it boldly differentiates between a person being smart or nerdy, how it glorifies women in the science field, and how it magnifies the importance of have balance in one’s life.

Overall, Thunder Force is an all-around fun movie and you can tell that the cast definitely had fun making it. Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer once again deliver stellar performances. Jason Bateman had me cracking up with his touch of sarcasm. Don’t go into this film with high expectations, just sit back and enjoy this fun film.
